Wicker - What it is and How It's Made

Wicker refers to a way of twinning natural materials like willow, rattan, cane, bamboo and so forth into intricate patterns. Wicker as a type of furniture is made from weaving intertwined thin branches around a frame and molding it into a desirable shape to form tables, chairs, beds or sofas.

Most of this furniture is made by hand and they mostly come from Southeast Asia, places like Indonesia, Philippines and China. Wicker became popular in the early centuries of Victorian era, because of its smooth, clean finish which was perceived as more hygienic than the upholstered type of furniture.

The wicker furniture is widely classified into two types: loom woven and the artificial wicker furniture. Loom made wicker furniture makes use of natural products like the rattan, cane or bamboo.

To make them, the material is first dipped in resin emulsions to make a moisture resistant shield. Synthetic wicker however is hand-woven from polyethylene, fiber glass or resin. This is a product that looks exactly like the natural wicker but is washable, water resistant, colorfast, and ultraviolet as well as frost resistant.

The synthetic wicker furniture basically has aluminum frames to enhance their strength and durability. It is usually made with UV inhibitors which resist the damaging effects of the sunrays, harsh weather and changing temperatures.

A great variety of them are dipped in a special coating in order to make it fade resistant and minimize flaking and splitting.

Wicker is available in first colors, stained or painted surfaces. It is comfortable, durable and versatile and manageable. This is because it matches most upholstery ones. It is liked for outdoor use on the decks and patios because it is easy to clean with water plus it is very light.

Wicker is durable which means it can last many years if looked after properly. It is easy to maintain but it is good to vacuum and dust it regularly plus occasionally polishing it with furniture polish. To restore its finish, a layer of lacquer should be used.
